Taylor Swift's new album "The Tortured Poets Department" is almost guaranteed to be a bestseller. But no matter how well it does, it won't be the way Swift earns most of her money this year. In fact, the remaining leg of her Eras tour will add much more to Swift's billion-dollar fortune. Swift's Eras Tour brought in more than $1 billion in ticket sales last year over its 66 dates. Swift's cut is unknown, but based on industry standards, she will surely earn nine figures in 2024 from ticket sales.

Music licensing talks are heating up between TikTok and Universal Music Group as negotiations have left the conference room and entered the public sphere. "Their core mission is to generate as much money as they can from their recordings for their shareholders," David Herlihy, a copyright lawyer and music industry professor at Northeastern University, told BI. The company is in the process of launching a dedicated streaming app, TikTok Music, and has worked closely with artists on influencer listening parties, livestreams, and in-person events. But TikTok, as a global social giant, is an important product for music artists and labels. This is why the music industry is seeking to capture more value."

The streaming world is fighting to court young users who want a blended social-music experience. SoundCloud isn't alone among streamers in embracing TikTok-style song discovery and active listening. And, TikTok itself runs a "For You" page in its newly released music-streaming app, TikTok Music, which is currently available in five countries. SoundCloud has long encouraged active listening in its app by putting commenting front and center, offering a messaging tool, and encouraging artist-to-fan interactions. She added: "Younger consumers are more interested in having a more social streaming experience."

Now, it's using that influence to kick-start its own music-streaming app, TikTok Music. Like TikTok's interface, TikTok Music includes a "For You" feed of recommended content. This sets it apart from leading streamers like Spotify and Apple Music, which have limited in-app social features. It's still very early days for TikTok Music, and its rivals have a big headstart — Apple Music and Spotify are each in more than 100 countries. TikTok has not yet said when TikTok Music will roll out to other countries including the US.

Some market shareThe music streaming market is currently dominated by Swedish giant Spotify and Apple Music. Spotify commands almost 31% of the global streaming market with Apple Music following with 13.7%, according to the International Music Summit Business Report 2023. But Cirisano said that heavy TikTok users could convert into TikTok Music users if they are using other services such as Spotify. Still, Woo of Phillip Securities Research said TikTok Music presents a "low risk" for Spotify and Apple Music. Spotify and Apple Music did not respond to CNBC's requests for comment.

The company is using its editorial influence on TikTok, Resso, and CapCut to promote SoundOn songs. Would it eventually roll out a standalone music streaming service, as a May 2022 trademark filing from its parent company ByteDance suggested? The company is now offering editorial placements to some SoundOn artists across TikTok, ByteDance's music streaming app Resso, and its video-editing app CapCut. These placements, which include being featured in high-traffic playlists, offer SoundOn users a unique path to being discovered. TikTok's parent ByteDance previously sought to hire for a similar A&R role in Jakarta, Music Business Worldwide reported in May.
Several of this year's Grammy nominees, including "abcdefu" singer Gayle and R&B artist Muni Long, rose in popularity after influencers and everyday users posted TikTok videos with their music. Even as the music industry gathers in Los Angeles to celebrate artists and their songs at Sunday's Grammy awards, the relationship between hitmaker TikTok and music labels is showing signs of strain. As deals with the major music companies expire, the labels are looking to receive some of TikTok's ad revenue, according to Tatiana Cirisano, music industry analyst for Midia Research. One music industry insider, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said "it’s open to interpretation" why this is happening now. "TikTok has become really integral to the way that younger people relate to music, discover music and consume it,” Cirisano said.
